PSHE
At Haslingfield Endowed Primary School, PSHE sits at the heart of our curriculum. It supports children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, while nurturing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. We believe that strong personal development underpins success across the curriculum and prepares pupils for life beyond primary school.
PSHE is taught weekly from Reception to Year 6, following the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme. Our curriculum provides relevant, meaningful learning that builds emotional literacy, resilience, and mental and physical well‑being. Through this, children gain a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and learn how to contribute positively to both the school community and wider society.
At the core of our PSHE teaching is a commitment to promoting our school values: respect and tolerance, determination and perseverance, empathy and kindness, honesty and responsibility, aspiration and excellence, and independence and co‑operation. These values are woven throughout the curriculum, helping children develop the character, confidence and compassion needed to thrive in an ever‑changing world.

Our PSHE curriculum is shaped by our school vision, ensuring that every child—regardless of background, ability or additional needs—is supported to flourish and become the very best version of themselves. We teach the National Curriculum through a carefully sequenced progression of skills and knowledge, enabling learning to build year‑on‑year in a meaningful and coherent way.
We follow the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme, which provides a complete PSHE curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Learning is organised across four age‑specific entitlement frameworks, showing clear progression in the strands of Citizenship, Healthy & Safer Lifestyles, Myself & My Relationships and Economic Wellbeing. Children explore a wide range of topics through a two‑year rolling programme, ensuring breadth and depth across the school.
In addition to the planned curriculum, teachers use circle time and responsive PSHE sessions to address the needs and experiences of their class. This flexible approach allows staff to support children with real‑life situations as they arise. Each class records its PSHE journey in a whole‑class floor book, capturing discussions, reflections and learning over time.
PSHE also plays a central role in our school assemblies, where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is nurtured. Weekly assemblies highlight and celebrate our core values—respect and tolerance, determination and perseverance, empathy and kindness, honesty and responsibility, aspiration and excellence, and independence and co‑operation—helping children understand how these values shape their behaviour and relationships.
Impact
By the time children leave Haslingfield Endowed Primary School, they will show a strong willingness to try new things, challenge themselves and persevere. They will have a secure understanding of how to stay safe and healthy, and how to build positive, respectful relationships with peers and adults both now and in the future.
Pupils develop strategies to manage their emotions and gain a deeper understanding of how to look after their mental health and well‑being. They learn to recognise their own feelings, respond appropriately to challenges and seek support when needed.
Children leave us with a clear appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. They understand and can apply the British Values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, the rule of law and liberty in age‑appropriate ways.
By Upper Key Stage 2, pupils have a strong, secure understanding of the physical and emotional aspects of Relationships and Sex Education, enabling them to move confidently into the next stage of their education.
