Skills & Knowledge Progression Documents

At Haslingfield Endowed Primary School, we believe mathematics is an essential life skill. Our aim is to help children become confident, fluent mathematicians who can problem‑solve, reason, think logically and work systematically, both independently and collaboratively.

Daily practice of arithmetic and core number skills builds strong fluency and supports children in developing secure foundations for more abstract concepts. This regular rehearsal helps pupils make meaningful links across mathematical ideas.

​

Children experience mathematics through concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches, enabling them to build it, draw it, write it and say it. This structure supports deep understanding and ensures that mathematical concepts are accessible to all learners.

Curriculum Intent

Implementation

We teach the National Curriculum using the White Rose Maths progression, ensuring full coverage of place value, the four operations, fractions and wider curriculum content. Teachers draw on a range of high‑quality resources, including White Rose Premium materials, Classroom Secrets, Active Maths and I See Reasoning, to support varied and engaging lessons.

To support children who need additional help, we use targeted interventions and programmes designed to close gaps and strengthen understanding. Lessons are taught through whole‑class mixed‑ability teaching, alongside smaller, focused group work where appropriate.

Cross-curricular learning

Where possible, mathematics is linked to other subjects to strengthen understanding and relevance. Teachers track progress using Insight and other assessment tools, updated half‑termly or as units are completed.

To consolidate learning at home, children in KS1 and KS2 receive fortnightly homework linked to class work, provided either in written form or online.

​

Impact

As a result of our maths teaching, children at Haslingfield are engaged, motivated and ready to challenge themselves by selecting the route of learning that best stretches their thinking. Pupils can talk confidently about their mathematical learning, explain links between topics and describe how they apply these skills in other subjects.

Teachers deliver varied, purposeful lessons using both classroom and outdoor spaces, supported by a wide range of mathematical resources. Throughout teaching, staff continually monitor progress to ensure children meet year‑group expectations and that any gaps are identified and addressed promptly.

Lesson Structure

Each maths lesson begins with a recap of recent learning and a review of content taught four weeks earlier. This supports long‑term retention and helps children make connections between topics.

​

In KS1 and KS2, pupils access three routes of learning, each offering increasing depth and challenge. Across all lessons, children use concrete resources such as Numicon, Dienes and multilink to represent problems. They then move to pictorial representations—drawing sticks and dots, number lines or diagrams—before applying written methods such as column calculations and number sentences.
