The Role of School Governors

School Governors provide strategic leadership and accountability, focusing on the long‑term direction of the school rather than day‑to‑day operations. Their role centres on shaping the school’s vision and development priorities, ensuring the budget is used effectively, and supporting and challenging the headteacher and leadership team to secure continuous improvement.

They act as a critical friend to the school, asking thoughtful questions, reviewing evidence and helping to strengthen systems and practice. Most governors attend around six meetings per year. Although the role requires commitment and drive, it offers significant professional and personal rewards — from developing leadership skills to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children.

Circle Model of Governance

From 1st September 2025, our Governing Body will adopt the Circle Model of Governance. Under this approach, the board operates as a single team rather than through multiple committees. All governors are involved in every aspect of governance, promoting:

Streamlined decision‑making
Stronger collaboration
Consistent communication

This model ensures every governor is well‑informed, actively engaged and able to contribute fully to the strategic leadership of the school.

Diversity of the Board

As a school, we recognise that diversity of thought, experience and perspective is essential for strong governance and effective decision‑making.

We regularly collect diversity information from our governors and use this, where appropriate, to:

Strengthen recruitment by identifying gaps in experience or representation
Develop board practice to ensure all governors can participate fully
Prioritise training and awareness‑raising in key areas
Address potential blind spots by seeking wider perspectives on opportunities, challenges and risks
