Science

At Haslingfield Primary, we recognise the importance of Science in helping children understand the world around them. We give Science the prominence it deserves by teaching it as a discrete subject, while making meaningful links to our Creative Curriculum themes.

Our science curriculum aims to help children:

​

• Build knowledge of the world and how it works

• Develop key scientific skills that enable them to think, question and work scientifically

• Understand scientific processes with increasing depth and confidence

​

We also want children to appreciate how Science influences their lives today and how it shapes the future. Our curriculum nurtures natural curiosity, encourages respect for living things and the environment, and provides opportunities for children to evaluate evidence and draw thoughtful conclusions.

Scientific enquiry skills are woven through every topic and revisited as children move through the school. For example, topics such as Plants are introduced in Key Stage One and explored in greater depth in Key Stage Two. This approach helps children build on prior learning, strengthen long‑term understanding and maintain enthusiasm for scientific study.

Children are supported to:

• Observe closely and ask thoughtful questions

• Plan and carry out investigations

• Explore possible answers independently

• Use and apply specialist vocabulary with increasing accuracy

• Communicate ideas clearly through effective questioning and discussion

Concepts are reinforced by focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry, enabling pupils to use a range of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions.

Our intention is to build a Science curriculum that develops secure knowledge, fosters curiosity and equips children to become confident, enquiry‑led learners.
